DESCRIPTION: Hilly House is a speculative single-family infill development located near Greenville’s city center. The property is deep and narrow, of relatively conventional urban dimensions. Despite this, the lot has a uniquely rural feel, as it is surrounded by an open, forested area and has significant topographical change along the depth of the lot. The 3-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom “starter home” was conceived as a pair of rectangular volumes connected by an architectural hyphen. Corner voids, one per volume, serve as front and reach points of entry. Thin cantilevered canopies introduce depth to the facades in these areas. The rear-most volume has been articulated such that it appears to be sliding down the slope that is native to the site. This is reflected in plan by way of a large central stair that separates the living area from the kitchen/dining space which features a twelve-foot ceiling height as a result. A strong brick datum that forms the water table, the front/rear porches, and the hyphen is meant to reinforce this diagram.
