DESCRIPTION: Garden Wall House is a single-family residence planned for the large backyard of a historic downtown Charleston property. The design of the house seeks to maximize privacy from the existing structure on the property and reinforce the autonomy of the implicit rear flag lot that site plan suggests. The massing originated from the idea of a generous garden wall that outlines the shape of this implied flag lot to create a secluded retreat. The L-shaped footprint of the residence appears to grow out of this wall, integrating some portions into the building elevations while leaving other sections of the garden wall freestanding. The eastern and southern facades are relatively opaque while the northern and western facades, which help define the courtyard and pool deck, are heavily glazed. The massive, monolithic reading with its gathered windows offers a counterpoint to the more delicate architectural vernacular in the area. The distinction between old and new is clear, yet the meticulously detailed red brick cladding serves as a nod to the heavy use of this material throughout the historic Upper Peninsula neighborhood.
