DESCRIPTION: Art-partment is the complete renovation of an upper-level unit in Charleston’s 1970s Dockside condominium building. The owners sought to reconfigure the residence to increase the practical function of the living areas and to better accommodate their extensive art collection. The design was largely conceived as not an apartment in which they can display art, but rather a gallery space in which they can live. The resulting ‘white box’ reading is contrasted by a compact reconfigured kitchen clad entirely in quartersawn white oak. Full height pivot doors in the living room and office hide closets and storage areas while maintaining wall space for hanging art. Curved walls soften the spaces and help to further offset the austerity that is generally associated with the gallery aesthetic.
