DESCRIPTION: This project includes the restoration of four historic structures and the construction of a new single-family residence on a property in Georgia horse country. The 7.5-acre site was originally occupied by several buildings of various styles, ages, and uses. Four of these are set to be renovated and repurposed as amenity structures for the main house. The conceptual goal of the project is to effectively restore the ‘rural estate’ character that is inherent to the property. To accomplish this, the new building has been strategically located such that it completes an implicit courtyard formed with the existing structures. The design of the house has been conceived as a collection of long gabled volumes of equal width but varying orientations. The basic forms reference the utilitarian equestrian structures in the area, with the rhythmic pattern of the facades acknowledging the repetitive beauty of simple stable structures. This nod to the vernacular architecture is further defined by a deep corbelled brick pattern consistent across each facade. The interior planning is similarly intuitive as each volume houses a single or similar function. A linear axis ties the four volumes together from the outside and also acts as a main corridor though which all interior spaces are accessed.
